So What is New you ask....

Well what is new? For one the New Year!! Time of new beginnings, planning the new crops to start seeds for, and what projects I would love to bring to fruition this year.

My plans are to take one day at a time and approach any plan with great courage and knowing it may take more than a year for something to happen.

In my frame of thinking I need to plan smartly so I can live happily and especially comfortably as I get older.

First thing I needed was a job so I can build money to build my business so I can help others and myself; ultimately with a goal that it brings in a great income. Well I start a new Job on the 16th.! Yay I am excited but have my worries as I do with any new job.

One of my stumbling block with this business I would love to own is how do you offer something so that everybody can access it with out someone being left out do to finances. All so so ignorant greedy people don't take advantage of me and what I want to offer?! Then how big do I want it too be, and will I be able to handle the stress that may come with it?!

So that is some of the things floating around in my head tonight on this beautiful Full Moon!

Ok it is the New Year and time to complete things we have started so we can make room to bring new things into our lives. I finished the office a while ago but didn't show some pictures so I will have to post them. I begin a new job Monday the 16th. of January thank god cause it has been a year sense I worked and I do need funds to live and play.

So after i get this job I intend on saving some money to do the apprenticeship program I been longing to do, and hopefully soon after that I will begin making that progress to build a business.

Well I am in the final stretches of finishing the project of rearranging two rooms to regain my bedroom as a precious sleeping area. The Office/Craft-room is about finished and it only took a year (note the sarcasm). I will post pictures here to show the shelving up and some of the stuff in its place soon.

Well I was getting board so I decided to find something to amuse me while on Unemployment. Well I was admiring the scarf my sister made me for Christmas and I said I can do that, and then it struck me.. Yeah know one of those "deee ta deee" moments, That I could have been making hats, scarfs, and mittens for my grandchildren for the winter instead of complaining to my daughter to get them some. So it began; I pulled out all yarn I owned and sent word to my Aunt that I needed yarn and that was all it took. My Aunt came over with a trash bag half full of goodies (yarn), and let me tell you she made my day! Also GOOGLE is your friend! An addicting friend but a friend none the less. I googled Crocheted hats and that was it I was hooked. I have found the mother load; Dresses, Hats, Scarves, Mittens, and toys!!

So I ended up making three hats. I was attracted to this hat (Gooseberry Flapper Hats) but didn't have the cash to buy the pattern so I kept looking and found this pattern (The Art of Crochet by Teresa) and here Youtube videos (Crochet Shell Beanie Hat) and I found a couple other ones too. These sites are awesome and Teresa is an awesome teacher I love her sites she gives you the patterns but you also get a step by step tutorial video too.... BONUS! I'm telling you I never felt like I had confidence in what I crochet till I made these hats n things:

I have been away for a while because the creator has herd my cries and need for a job. I have had the greatest opportunity plop right into my lap and have been enjoying myself. Though some days are a bit scary and stressful I have found myself working long and hard and not caring if I go home lol.

On the downside the Squirrel I was caring for passed away today while I was gone to work. I loved that squirrel and Intended on releasing her in the spring when she was strong enough but apparently that wasn't the plan for this squirrel.

I hope everyone has a great Thanksgiving!! Eat well and enjoy your families company.

October Blog Party: Bio-regional herbs for Colds and Flu

Cold n Flu season is upon us and well I have been trying to get prepared ahead of time. Normally if someone got sick they would be sent to bed immediately and bundled up, served fluids and soup. My great grandmother use to give us Catnip tea when we had upset tummies or baby was colicky; though I never remembered this (too little I guess) I took great joy in listening to my uncle tell me stories about great grandma serving us herbals. So to help my family and friends I have picked local Elderberries (as well as baught some), Elderflower, Yarrow, Peppermint, Blackberry leaf, & Boneset. I have made tinctures out of them all, have some dried, and I have made some Elderberry Syrup. I also have bought Chamomile tea to have on hand because this is the first year I have grown Chamomile and want it to get established before I go plucking it for medicines.

The Elderberry Syrup - I have made with fresh and dried berries. I add Ginger (great for the belly & warming the body), Cinnamon, Lemon, & Honey. Normally if I made a 8 oz. batch I would top it of with 1 1/2 oz. of Brandy or Vodka (80 proof or better). This year I used an Elder Tincture to put the 20% alcohol in, and increase the elder healing potency! I give this to my family at the first sniffle, sneeze, or cough; and I give 1 tbsp. 2 to 3 times daily. My children are all adults now so for my grand children I substitute out the Honey and use Glycerin or OG Raw Sugar Unrefined. I also may or may not use the Alcohol too. I would give them 1 tsp 2 to 3 times a day depending on how sick they were or how often they tend to get sick. My Sons friends come over when there sick and ask for some..... They don't care for the taste but they do ask for it cause they know it works. Great Anti-viral!

The Blackberry leaf - tincture I made to keep on hand for those bouts of diarrhea.

Yarrow - is great for inducing sweating to help get rid of illness quicker, anti-inflammatory, & anti-microbial.

Peppermint - I love for when ever any of us get a cold, it helps with opening the air passages so we can breath better, relieves upset tummies, and good for fevers where your clammy and skin feels cold.

Boneset - I just learned about this summer at a Renaissance(sp) festival from an herbalist whom has a shop there and she said its for fevers, aches n pains that go bone deep. Then over the rest of the summer I kept hearing about it so now I have some on hand. unfortunately not a lot but I'm sure we will do fine.

The Chamomile - Tea besides tasting yummy it relaxes yeah, eases some pain, good for fever in the young ones, and is calming.

Elderflower - I'm new to using but have it on hand to use during a full swing flu, and to use for the children for fevers.

So far I haven't had anyone come down with major illnesses, and have put a road block up when my son seemed to be getting sick and started giving him the syrup right away. This is part of my getting prepared for what we perceive to be a LONG cold winter, which brings illness with it.

Feeling accomplished & Stressing

On one hand I feel accomplished, my teen/adults headed back to school today and came home happy. Well that is except my daughter she came home happy but still wants to change schools. Im afraid that will lead to her not finishing school...you know the whole out of site out of mind saying. I feel so accomplished because at least (trying to stay positive here) the two of them (Son & Daughter (younger)) are on there last year of school and with all grace of the creator they will graduate this comming summer. Graduate....TWO of them from high school. Those are greater odds than 1 out of four for my Mother. I mean we eventually went back and graduated the hard way but then it was 4 out of four, one high school grad and three GED. I guess that is better than no graduation but that is the hardest way.

My other accomplishment is that my son is reunited with his father's family and hopefully soon with his dad.

Now to try and afford a graduation party....Next year.

Wondiferious Weed Walk pt.2

The journey began with a cool very early morning ride to pick up Susie in Sherburne NY. We had to deal with bouts of thick fog and I mean thick. We grabbed Susie and headed on our way to PA. once we finally arrived in PA you can tell the difference because they appear to be cleaner and less densely populated then NY. What beautiful scenery; mountains and hill sides plenty of wilderness.

Our first stop was to "The Rosemary House and Garden" In Mechanicsburg PA; WOW what a beautiful shop. from the front you couldn't imagine the jewel of a garden they had in the back. The build was sort of like those brown stones in NY but a tad smaller (height wise), but very quaint. The store is a Tea cup & Herb heaven with some antique thing mixed right in. It was beautiful. After purchasing my list of stuff that I intended on buying I also left with a beautiful poster that kinda of reminds me of Beatrix Potter type artistry.

So we head back out on the road toward our main destination with our goods in hand, and continue to enjoy the scenery. We had to go through tunnels in the mountain side (3 times) WOW they where huge! A little nerve wracking but neat as well. Finally we arrive to the campsite in Somerset PA and take a look see at the bunkers. Meet up with Tina Sams & Maryann Schwartz (Sisters) whom had be freshening up the bunkers and waiting a couple hours. Well the bunkers weren't what I expected BUT they had beds unlike a different cabin in North-western corner of PA whom only had rooms and no cots, just floors. SO that being said everything else was kinda cool, and Grace (keeper of campsite) is very sweet.

From there we went to our Friday night dinner get together at Pine Grill; which was a blast and very filling. The dinner included The Wills' (Barb, Fred, & Children), Debbi, Diane, Tina S., Maryann, ?, Susie, Tina K., and myself. We ate well, laughed well, and reluctantly had to end so we could go back and get our stuff in cabin and too sleep for weed walk next day.

The weed walk was upon us and we thought we where making great time when we realized we didn't get the actual location of weed walk and ended up at Sugar Grove the Will's Store. lol
Luckily Susie had ask Tina S. for a contact number so we weren't late. We left at 5 am Friday so we didn't receive the actual directions before we left, and didn't think to double check Friday at dinner.

The Will's have beautiful property. You are greated with a lush lawn and a beautiful herb/rock (Feary Garden) garden and they have a great house. They had everything set up so we can see demo's in the comfort of the shade. Our first demo was wild edibles presented by Tina & Maryann.

They are so comical and packed full of info; they feed off each other and don't miss a beat. You know quick witted... Then there was a quick break and then our 2hr. trip Around the Wills property Guided by Fred Will (See Pic Below) to do wild plant identification.

This is a very humble gentleman whom has generation knowledge that he shared. Meaning it has been passed down from generation to generation, and he is willing to share with the public. How generous of him. He showed us numerous plants some I knew, some I have seen, and some I had no clue what they where. So I truly walked away from this event with added info. After the Weed walk we came back and had lunch and the menu consisted of: Gazpacho (Cold Veggie soup), Salad with wild flowers water cress & Balsamic Vinegar Oil dressing, Stone oven baked (outdoors) homemade dinner rolls, Dill Butter, Sloppy Joes, Tea berry (Wintergreen) Cold tea!! To finish up that great meal (Thanks to Barb Will and her Children); Deb(?) made two different berry sauces (Raspberry, Blackberry) drizzled over angel cake! YUMMY I should have taken photos sorry. It was beautiful.

The Next Presentation was Tincturing by Susanna Reppert Brill of Rosemary House & Garden and I loved it. Very informational, we got to taste test the fruits of her labor. She even shared the difference in how her husband makes it and how the simpler makes it. I love that. She even demoed making boneset tincture (which I'm going to make some myself) which she picked fresh at weed walk, and showed us her tools of trade and a picture of her hubbies tools of trade.

After Susanna's presentation Fred finished things up with a great test on folklore relating to plants and we all had a great time doing this. We knew some and learned a lot! We then broke away and went shopping at the vendors tables (Sorry didn't get pictures of them) There where: Jellies, Maple roasted nuts, Soaps, Shataki mushroom logs, beeswax, beeswax candles, Books, tinctures, ?, More tinctures, bugoff spray, balms, books, jewelery, and candy being sold; there was also beautiful hand made plaques, platters, with real plant imprinted in them and hand painted of clay. Yes I did put duplicates because I was listing by table.

After Fred happily helped people get diggings of plants and things to stick them in we all headed off to where ever we came from. Well except my Sister, Susie, & myself. We went back to cabin cooled down and then went to see the memorial site of Flight 93, and a covered bridge before returning to cabin with food too play Wildcraft game by the Gallagher's of HerbMentor.com. We had a blast and as it got later we got giddier and where on a natural not enough sleep high lol. Might post picture here soon of us playing.

Sunday we packed up and returned home!

Now that my children have left home I have talked my boyfriend into allowing me to change the one extra room into my new office instead of the laundry room. So here are some pictures:

Weekend Herb Wondering

Saturday when the weather was warm we (Sister, her son, my daughter, & my grandchildren) went to 3 Mile Bay and hung out; the water was tooooo cold but we played with the children on the waterside. We then went for a walk and took pictures and these are just a few of the things we saw.

Spring Sprung Early wooot

Ok, Spring has sprung early so we have been doing basic yard clean up. You know clearing the debris of leaves, sticks, and dead plant parts. Now that the yard looking good and we can stand back and see where my Raised garden beds are going to go.

Unfortunately I won't be able to fill them this spring but I will have them prepared and waiting for the coming spring. The cost to build the boxes and buying enough filler (organic Soils, manure, straw, and worms) to fill that was too much for me in one shot. So I didn't start all my seeds and for this year we will just garden small again. *sigh* Its ok baby steps are best.

With Spring around the corner I have been gathering all my seeds together, my plans for the garden, and watching the Garden Girl video's over n over again. I first saw the garden girl videos little over a year ago, and It really made me want to finally get my gardening in order.

Im one for trying to do things from scratch and on my own; you know establishing my independance!! I wanted to be growing my own foods too. So I made sketches, list, and baught seeds so I can begin this new project in my backyard. Now all I have to do is get the lumber for Raised Garden Beds!! I think im going to wait another year before I encorperate chickens into my garden because our towns people are ummm how do we say this tastefully..... They just have too many petty standards! I mean I knew someone whom got in trouble for putting there portable shed in the wrong area of there yard *giggles* that is just plain crazy. Could you imagine what there going to say about chickens in an area that was farm but now suburbia.... *giggles* it kills me to think about it.

So in the beginning of march im off to find lumber, little pvc pipes, & plastic!! Wooooot and Order more seeds hehehe.

I was just thinking about somethings I did as a child and I remember playing in a vacant house in the city and in this house I came across a box of different very old hotel soaps. Wow some of the package designs and fragrances. I absolutely loved them! I was curious as to how they where made but to young to want to find out. Then as a young adult (20’s) a lady had homemade soap balls in her bathroom and I asked how she made them. It seemed simple and so began my dig for how too make things from scratch on my own. My sister (Sam) beat me to it by one because she already had found a book about soapmaking and that is how we got started…though we don’t make soaps together anymore, and her soap making adventures are put on the back burner.

It's Getting closer to Halloween

Here it’s October 22nd, and it is almost Halloween. What have I been up too you might be wondering? Well I have been decorating on and off sense very end of September for Fall & Halloween's coming. I have had 3 of 4 pumpkins go to waste before I could carve and save seeds; thanks to a nice warm spell (no complaints) and my lovely neighbor of squirrels!! I have a trick up my sleeve next year.

So I have set up pretty scare crow people old and new, hay, mums, and various other Halloween decorations too. A great wind has come through and forced me to have to take down two scare crows. I will put them back out tommorrow. Over the next couple days I will be cleaning house and setting up for the Halloween party to take place her halloween night. Oh I can't wait!!

I have made some Elderberry Rosehip Syrup, and some homemade salves to use over the winter. I can't believe that my own father like my cream concoction I made. I was blown away and surprized. Now that winter is nearly got her grip on us I will have to order the rest of my herbs in small quantities over time. I will post some Pictures soon... hopefully.

Wednesday April 16th. my sister, her son, and I walked around Green Lakes and Part of Round Lake. We got a little ambitious *giggles*. It was a beautiful day, not cold but not over-whelmingly hot! We took a bunch of pictures of different plants.

Why is it so hard to know where we stand spiritually. I think us mixed cultured people have these feelings of being torn tword what belief is the truth. Is there a true belief?!

I feel more pull tword one cultures beliefs, and then they are the hardest at times to be accepted into. After what my people have gone through I can't blame them but they truely have to look at the ones whom are being pushed away because we have a strong need to be taught and practice, and there are lots of us dying with a sense of disconnection and unfullfilment. Hidden knowledge is dying with us. Why I believe this is hard to explain, but I believe we are born with a sense of the knowledge. As children we show it, and as we grow-up it is pushed aside or out of us, and then we are left lost and with out passing it on. We can't pass it on because we aren't taught how it is use, savor, worship, consumme it, and or how it is to be passed on.

I remember as a child practically living outdoors. My grandmother telling me whom I am. While playing outside I never felt any disconnection. I believed.... In everything as a whole. I still do. I believe in plants helping us, and everything I made was from the earth. All this is still in my soul. Somewhere along the line of entering school and being forced to grow up made me question myself, my beliefs, and what I had know as a child. Books can only teach you so much and tend to leave you longing for more! I struggle daily to try and figure out all I knew, learned, and believed. Im trying to write it all down; but there are missing pieces of the puzzle!

This is why I went camping to try and figure things out. It didn't work out that way. Oh well another time I hope.

Moss Lake

I had just went camping Aug. 18th. - 21st. 2007. What a beautiful time! I got to enjoy 3 days and 4 nights with my sister at the most beautiful Moss Lake.

Though we didn't do anything fastinating or out of the ordinary, it was a great get away for two moms. The area in which we stayed had all kinds of plants and trees; as well as wild life. Especially coyotes.

We found out the hard way that you only eat meals before dark in order not to attrack nocturnal animals. What a scary night lol. Believe you me, I will never do that again.

My two favorite types of soap are called Patchouli-berry, Lavender, and Oatmeal Milk & Honey.

I have been making soaps now for 6 years. Do I consider myself an expert? NO! My quote is, "we never know everything for we are for ever learning"!!

Is soaping hard? No, especially when you have determination. I love the traditional soaping known as CP (Cold Process), and or HP (Hot Process); CP is you heat oils up, make lye solution, bring both down to close temps and then mix to trace add EO's & or herbs; then mold. HP is almost same thing EXCEPT you continue cooking for a time longer which allows for shorter curing time! I do stick with CP more.

I like homemade soaps because I can controll thee amount of chemicals that are added into my soaps. There really isn't any necessary need for all those chemicals.

One thing I wish is that I had recieved recipes from my grandparents of how they made things; but seems as though some people in my family didn't think anyone would want that stuff. Boy where they wrong.
